He Saved The Day

Scripture:

10: In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what He suffered.

11: Both the One who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.

12": He says, “I will declare Your name to My brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing Your praises.”

13: And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again He says, “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”

14: Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—

15: and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

16: For surely it is not angels He helps, but Abraham’s descendants.

17: For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people.

18: Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 2 (NIV)

There is something within the human spirit that is naturally drawn to heroes. Whether young or old, people are moved when a hero “saves the day.” In this present age, it seems that nearly everyone is in need of a hero. Thanks be to God for Jesus Christ, who provides everything humanity needs.

When Jesus left heaven and came to earth, He descended past the angels and entered a fallen world. The Lord Jesus came to earth in human form, leaving behind all that was rightfully His in heaven, in order to take the form of a servant and fulfill God’s plan to redeem the world through His death on the cross (Philippians 2). This truth is beautifully echoed in Kirk Franklin’s song “Love Theory”:

He saves the day, He will come through
He won't fail, that’s not what super heroes do
No greater love makes my heart beat
All I wanna do is make You proud of me

When Christ came to earth, He experienced poverty, physical suffering, pain, emotional stress, sadness, and exhaustion—everything humanity experiences. The Lord Jesus deeply sympathizes with the struggles of humankind. He knows. He cares. He has felt the same burdens that weigh upon people’s hearts. He has endured the limitations of the human body—fatigue, aching muscles, and physical pain. He understands not only because He is God, but because He became human. He knows exactly what every person endures at any given moment. Yet, Jesus never once sinned. He never yielded to human temptation.

Through His life, His suffering, and His sacrificial death, Jesus established a place—a mercy seat—where believers can come in prayer and receive what they need from Him at any moment, for any reason. God has an endless supply of mercy for all who trust in Him. What an incredible truth! Every person in this world is in need of that boundless mercy.

Jesus is alive today. He sits at the right hand of God and is ready to assist those who call upon Him. He is available to every believer and every family. The mercy and help required to face each day with genuine hope and joy come through Jesus Christ. He not only created a place of mercy where believers can find the strength they need, but He also carries their burdens when they allow Him to do so. In the darkest moments, when loneliness, despair, or fear threaten to take hold, He remains near. No matter the trial, no matter the test, He is able to help. There is no reason for anyone to face life’s challenges alone. Jesus stands ready to receive all who come to Him. He is humanity’s true superhero. He saved the day.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for fulfilling Your promise to redeem us and save us from the power and penalty of sin. We trust in hope for the day when we will be delivered from the very presence of sin. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to die so that we could live. Because He made that “great exchange”, help us to live daily in the newness of life as Your children. Thank You for Jesus, who saved the day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection:

“The reality of loving God is loving Him like He's a Superhero who actually saved you from stuff rather than a Santa Claus who merely gave you some stuff.”
