October Devotional: Honoring Legacy and Embracing Purpose

The month of October ushers in a season of change—falling leaves and sometimes cooler temperatures. For Eastern Star and our church community, October is a time to honor legacy, recommit to purpose, and celebrate a new shift.

Historic milestones of Black history took place in the month of October—some that resonate deeply within the black church, and knowledge we can share with our children. On October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first Black Supreme Court Justice—a reminder of the power of justice and perseverance through uncertain times. Matthew 5:6 speaks of a hunger for Justice as a blessing, while Luke 11:42 recounts Jesus criticizing those who neglect Justice. October 6 commemorates the Fisk University Jubilee Singers’ first national tour in 1871, using church spirituals to uplift and educate the community. These historical events are a part of the fabric of the Black church—why we advocate for those who cannot; why we worship a “Justice-Loving” God. Information about our history that may be overlooked by some.

At Eastern Star Church, October 2025 is a sacred time in our church history – a time to honor our past and celebrate the future. As Guest Pastor Darrell Hall mentioned in his sermon a few weeks ago, while we may be in the midst of transition, we are called to reflect on the enduring power and the presence of God. This month of service and worship invites “all hands on deck”—from children to our Senior Saints. All families are encouraged to share our faith by volunteering, performing acts of service with our families, and sharing our spiritual gifts.

Let October be a month of gratitude, reflection, and recommitment. As we honor our legacy, and welcome our future—At Eastern Star Church, Jesus will Still be exalted, and the Word will Still be explained!

Lesson Recap

Children’s Ministry Lesson Highlights

In Children’s church, the kiddos learned about how God Helps Us Do Our Part (Exodus 1:1–2:10) and God Helps Us Keep Trying (Exodus 5:1–10:29). These stories reminded us that God is always present, guiding and strengthening His children. In Egypt, the Israelites suffered under slavery, yet God protected baby Moses through the courage and faith of his family, showing how He works when we do our part with trust and obedience. Later, when Pharaoh refused to listen, God’s power was revealed through the plagues, encouraging Moses to keep going. These lessons also remind us that God not only helps us act in faith but also strengthens us to never give up.

In Teen Church, we learned about trusting God in transition. Specifically, we learned about the life of David and his relationships. In Samuel 18:6-30, God used David’s musical gift to draw him into his purpose.

Introduction of the Teen Leadership Council to the Congregation

On this past 5th Sunday, we introduced our Teen Leadership Council to the congregation! This was an opportunity where our teens proudly shared their names and roles, while expressing their passion to serve and grow as leaders. We are so proud of these young people for stepping up, and we invite you to continue cheering them on and covering them in prayer as they lead with faith and boldness.
