Using Our Gifts to Serve Others

Many of us are blessed to belong to families where several generations can love one another and learn together, every day.

Scripture says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” These words from 1 Peter 4:10 invite families to see themselves as reflections of God’s grace. Every family member has been blessed with something unique, a gift. Some gifts are loud and visible—leadership, creativity, encouragement. Other gifts are quiet but powerful—the ability to listen, demonstrate patience, and show compassion. Everyone’s contribution is necessary.

For parents, we serve our children through sacrifice, protection, and guidance. Children serve when they help their siblings, spend time with their grandparents, stand up for their friends, or show they know the difference between right and wrong. Sometimes our teens express service to others through courage, conviction, and developing a sense of purpose as they grow into young adulthood. When each person recognizes their gift and chooses to use it for others, a family becomes a living expression of God’s grace.

Serving doesn’t always look like some big, grand gesture. It can be a teenager helping a younger sibling with homework, a child sharing their toys with others, or a parent showing patience and forgiveness when it’s hard to do so. Jesus taught us that true greatness comes from serving: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). When we serve, we look more like Jesus.

As a family that prays together and grows together, we can ask God for increased awareness of opportunities to serve—at home, at school, at work, in our houses of worship, and in our communities. When each person brings their gift to the table, a collective strength is created, and God’s love radiates from that unity.

In Galatians 5:13, Paul encourages us to, “…serve one another humbly in love.” Service is not a burden but a blessing—a way to reflect the One who served us first. Amen

What we learned last month!

Last month’s theme was “Prayer Life Realigned”. In Children’s Church, the students learned about prayer and the importance of being thankful. The memory verse was Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
