JEWEL Human Services Monthly Newsletter - OCTOBER 2026

Encouragement for the Month

“Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”

— Revelation 4:8 (NLT)

As we have learned during our Bible Study time with Pastor Jay, the book of Revelation is full of prophecy, symbolism, encouragement, and hope. Always remember that God is never surprised by world events. He remains on His throne. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is not only Savior, but also the conquering King who defeats darkness.

The messages to the seven churches emphasize perseverance despite trials, temptations, and persecution. May we remember God’s holiness and pursue Him daily. May we worship, may we praise, and may we lift the Lord God Almighty every chance we get, for this passage of Scripture shows that the first activity John sees in heaven is not judgment, prophecy, or end-time events. It is worship.

Highlights

During the month of September, JHS put “Your Tithes at Work” into action, providing $22,605.98 in benevolence assistance to both members and non-members. This support included help with mortgage, rent, utilities, and members’ counseling — meeting real needs and offering hope in meaningful ways.

And we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our staff and volunteers, whose hard work and compassion made it possible to provide meals to individuals and families in our community. We also would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the counseling team, who remain ready and available to support our members in times of need.

The goals and vision of the ROCK initiative are steadfast, and Eastern Star JEWEL Human Services is honored to lead the long-term strategies and plans that support it.

Closing Thoughts

May we remember what we learned from the Book of Revelation. God shall wipe away all tears, and our choices have eternal significance; God’s justice will ultimately prevail, and the enemy is defeated.

CARE Center Food Distributions

We provide compassionate support to our community through services such as food assistance.

Our mission is to provide our local and world communities with natural and spiritual resources that reflect the compassion of Christ through outreach and missions.

Pantry Tip: When Emotions Drive the Fork

Stress eating happens when we eat because we feel upset or worried, not because we are hungry. Studies show that when we are stressed, we tend to reach for snacks like chips, candy, or fast food. Eating too much of these foods can make us feel tired, grumpy, and have trouble sleeping. If stress eating goes on for too long, it can also cause long-term health concerns. Check out the tips below to avoid overeating when you are feeling stressed out.

Healthy Hacks

Ask yourself: is it hunger or just the blues? Before eating your favorite snack, ask yourself how you are TRULY feeling. Sometimes, it is easy to eat mindlessly when we are bored or upset.

Crunch on Calm – GO NUTS. Instead of foods that have a high amount of sugar and fat, such as chips or candy, choose a healthier snack like nuts, fruits, or whole grains. These foods will provide your body with the energy it needs and fuel your day for longer.

Stop the Stressing. Instead of mindlessly eating empty calories, choose another activity that will make you feel good, not only physically but mentally, too. This could be things like engaging in your favorite exercise, journaling, or taking a simple walk down the street. Start by making a list of activities you can do instead and try them out one by one.

Stay Hydrated. Sometimes, we may think we are hungry when we are actually just thirsty, so grab a glass of water before munching down more. Dehydration can lower energy levels and contribute to even more stress on the body. Water is the best choice and should be paired with every meal and snack from the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed.

The Importance of Understanding Eating Habits

Remember, it is okay to feel stressed—we all do sometimes. But the way we respond to stress can make a big difference in how we feel. The next time stress hits, take a moment to pause, breathe, and check in with your body. Are you hungry, or just needing a break? Choosing healthy snacks throughout the day, like fruits, veggies, or nuts, can help you feel satisfied without the crash that comes from sugary or salty comfort foods. Small choices add up to big changes—your body and mind will thank you.
