Steady Paths and Strong Foundations: A Parent’s Prayer for Father’s Day

Parents, please remember this one thing: a child doesn’t just follow in their father’s footsteps—they build on them. This is a parent’s prayer for both sons and daughters.  The way we live gives our children a steady path to walk and solid ground to grow from, on this Father’s Day and every day, as they grow into who God is shaping them to be.

Proverbs 20:7 reminds us, “The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.”  We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to live in a way that demonstrates a foundation that our children can build upon – higher and stronger than we ever did.

Parents must also share that God walks with each of us, personally. “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths,” (Proverbs 3:6).  While it’s debatable whether our children should/should not copy our journey, we can stress with confidence that our children can continue the journey with God’s help.

And when life feels confusing or too heavy,  let's encourage our children to hold onto our Heavenly Father’s promise in  Psalm 103:8, “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger,  abounding in love.”  On this Father’s  Day, let's remind ourselves that God’s love is consistent, steady, and patient,  and that’s the kind of love we want our children to experience from us, as well.  They will always need us offering guidance as they walk this journey that Father God has laid out for them.

What we learned last month!

In June’s Children’s Church, the children learned about the “ Fruits of the Spirit!”  Paul writes about the qualities, or spiritual fruit, that develop in us as we follow Jesus and are filled with the Holy Spirit. As the fruit of the Spirit grows in us, we become more like Jesus!  The memory verse was “But the fruit the Holy Spirit produces is love, joy, and peace. It is being patient, kind, and good. It is being faithful and gentle and having control of oneself.” Galatians 5:22–23
