GOD STOOPS DOWN
Scripture
6. This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.
7. So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
8. And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. …
John 8 (NKJV)
9. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,
10. nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6 (NKJV)
It has been said that “God puts His Word in dirty places.” Simply put, God places His Word in each and every person. No matter what one’s station in life is, all are admittedly unclean, cleansed only by the washing and regeneration of His Word. Some may choose to believe otherwise, but before Christ, every person was a mess. All were. Yet God sent His Son to cleanse humanity from the filth of their lives, making them new again. It is all because God became flesh and dwelt among us—He stooped down.
To stoop means to bend one’s head or body forward and downward, often lowering oneself to meet someone at their level, such as when speaking to a child or assisting someone unable to stand. In Psalm 113 (NIV), it is written: “Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth?” (verses 5–6). This passage illustrates that God sits so high that He must stoop down to observe the heavens and the earth. Yet He willingly does, and in doing so, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap” (verse 7). Since humanity could not rise to His level on their own, God stooped down in order to lift them up.
God’s love is profound and personal. God’s love is high and wide and deep. God’s love is everlasting. The God who is enthroned on high truly loves His people. He loves them enough to meet them where they are, yet too much to leave them as they are. He stooped down from His holy place to save them from sin, to restore them to righteousness and holiness, and to prepare a place for them so they can be with Him forever.
Now that He has done the work, it is time for people to say “yes” to His invitation and join Him in His work. God has commanded His people to share His lifesaving, life-giving Word with the world so that others may come to know Him—the One who loves deeply enough to stoop down and meet them where they are. God is not afraid of anyone’s mess.
In moments of loneliness, remember that God stoops down. In moments of feeling unloved, remember that God stoops down. Even in the struggle with sin, remember that God stoops down. This truth changes everything—you are never alone in this life. Life does not end at death, and every person has a purpose: to bring glory to God’s name.
Don’t miss this powerful reminder: God stooped down—now it is time for His people to stand up.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving us enough to become flesh and dwell among us. Because of Your great love, we have been redeemed. Saved from sin, adopted into Your family, made new again, and covered by the blood. Thank You, Lord, for loving us so deeply that You gave Your life for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
