Eastern Star Church Makes Space for Teens To Use Their Voices

Ephesians 2:10 states that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Throughout American history and world history, for that matter, society has devalued those born with darker skin. In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian and journalist, created Negro History Week, the second week of February, to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of African Americans in America. In 1970, Kent State University black educators and students expanded it to Black History Month and in 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized it as a month to be celebrated.

As we celebrate the contributions of Black people around the world this month, it’s important to recognize that we are raising the next generation of influencers. God has uniquely designed your child with purpose, but we must cultivate their ability to use their voices. According to an article written in the Smithsonian Magazine about how to boost and activate teen voices, the authors listed the following:

  • Create community where they feel safe to express themselves.

  • Create space for them to have difficult conversations around current events.

  • Expose them to teen histories and current teens that are making a difference, so they are empowered to do the same.
