Care Center

As the outreach ministry of Eastern Star Church, Care helps meet the needs of the less fortunate and individuals who are in need of emergency assistance. This includes church members as well as individuals and families in the greater Indianapolis community.

Emergency Assistance Program

We provide emergency assistance and professional services to families in need such as crisis intervention and referrals. This service assists with rent, utility and food assistance, and referrals to community partners for housing and other services. Call 317.547.5483 to talk with a case manager.

Items required for emergency assistance appointment:

  • No Walk-ins. By appointment only.
  • At your scheduled appointment time you must provide all of the items listed above (photo I.D., SS cards for everyone in household, proof of current address) AND proof of income (Most recent pay stub, unemployment stub, TANF verification letter or Social Security verification letter).
  • Money order for partial payment of rent or receipt showing payment was made.

Food Pantry

We provide food assistance to individuals in need by selecting and stocking food for distribution, and filling food orders/requests. Call 317.547.5483 to talk with a staff member. Like to provide assistance? Please give and see your dollars at work.

Items required for the food pantry (must bring each visit):

  • Photo I.D. (State ID or Driver's License)
  • Social Security Cards for EVERYONE in the household or individual printouts from the Social Security Office.
  • Proof of Current Address (Example: lease, mortgage statement, current utility bill, paycheck stub or recent mail from U.S. Post Office providing residency)

Food Pantry Hours:

Monday and Friday 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Clothing Pantry

Care provides the basic necessities for individuals and families in need. Our clients are able to visit the Clothing Pantry Monday and Friday 2 - 5 p.m. l Tuesday 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Case Management

With the love and compassion of Jesus Christ, dedicated case management counselors offer guidance for individuals and families in crisis.

Freedom Connections is an 10-week program that provides financial assistance to parents who are in need of rent/mortgage or utility assistance. Participants will be part of an intensive structure that encourages, motivates and guides them through their journey of success. Participants will meet individually with Outreach Staff and attend workshops encouraging freedom in areas such as Confidence Building, Employment, Money Management, Healthy Relationships and Parenting.


  • Must have children who are currently living in the home.
  • Must be either underemployed or unemployed and looking for a job.
  • Must demonstrate a valid need for assistance.
  • Must be willing to fully participate in the program and attend all workshops and appointments.

Darnae' Scales, MSW, LCSW

Missions Manager

Darnae’ Scales is the Missions Manager at Care. He received his Bachelor degree in Sociology from Indiana University in 1996. He received his Master’s degree in Social Service Administration and a graduate certificate in Health Administration and Policy in 1999 from The University of Chicago. Darnae’ is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Before coming on staff at Eastern Star Church, he was the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Interfaith Hospitality Network, an emergency shelter serving homeless families with children.

Christopher Mabrey, LMHC

Exhortation Manager

Chris Mabrey, is a Licensed Mental Health Therapist from Toledo, Ohio. He received his Master’s degree in School Counseling in 2009 from Butler University. He completed his coursework and internship for his LMHC in 2012 from Indiana Wesleyan University. Before he became the Exhortation Manager, he worked as a school counselor at Tindley Middle and High schools and went on to be a Home School Advisor in several Speedway Elementary Schools.

Destiny Jackson

Administrative Manager

Destiny Jackson is the Administrative Manager at Eastern Star Church - Care. She is excited and thankful for the opportunity to serve in ministry full time to assist in meeting the needs of the people inside the church and in the community. Destiny is currently attending Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies. She enjoys event planning and hopes to one day own an event planning company.
